Whether it’s singing into a fake microphone or air-guitaring when no one is looking, being a rock star is easily a fantasy in which almost everyone has indulged.
Most folk will drop the dream eventually and settle for something with stability and growth options. Still more will make the uncomfortable realization they have no talent, or be told in so many words by friends, family or teachers. The few remaining, those last folks standing, are generally those that have the personality traits and artistic abilities that are best suited to this difficult industry. Think of it as ‘musical natural selection’.
Would Darwin himself put money on you, if he were betting on you making it big? Or would you and your second hand acoustic go the way of the Dodo?
Find yourself a mirror. Failing that, raise the metaphorical mirror to yourself and ask yourself the following questions. Look into your eyes and do not spare your own feelings. Brutal honesty is an excellent tool to have at the ready, and one that you’ll need a lot if you intend to move forward in the entertainment industry in general.
1. Am I Talented?
This is the big question and the hardest to admit if the answer is no. For some, their love affair with the artform they are pursuing might overshadow their abilities. We’ve all seen painters at public parks, prideful in front of portraits worse than D grade highschool projects. You’ve probably also listened to a friend’s soundcloud or gone to their concert and wondered how you’d face them the day when they asked what you thought.
Oh no you no doubt shuddered, does my stuff sound like that?Am I even good enough to keep trying or am I wasting my time? How can I know for certain?
You’ll know you have a natural ability when an activity comes easy and you enjoy it. It’s effortless to hyperfocus and you fall into the process of whatever you’re doing without a struggle, losing track of time and sometimes even physical sensation. You’ll have a natural hunger for more knowledge, and may even become obsessed with improving your ability -locking yourself away to absorb and improve as much as you can. If you are ‘gifted’, your chosen activity is not only easier than everything else you do, but enjoyable as well.
2. Am I Dedicated?
Luck is second only to hard work in the music industry. Admittedly, exposure has a huge impact on the big break that everyone is striving for but it’s the hard work and commitment behind that exposure that makes the difference. 9% is a drop in the ocean of 91% failure and if you want to be a part of that exclusive drip drop club, you’re going to have to work harder than everyone who came before you and failed.
This means you may need to restructure your existing ideas around work. Ever been called ‘work shy’ or ‘lazy’? Has anyone ever referred to you as a ‘slacker’? Is missing deadlines one of your favourite hobbies? Look deep into that mirror and answer yourself honestly. You know who you are and you shouldn’t have to look long to get your answer.
3. Can I Take Care of Myself?
There are so many unique aspects to the artistic temperament. Those who are naturally creative generally show higher than average levels of sensitivity and tend to experience the world at a higher emotional vibration than most. Although fantastic for creation, This state of hypersensitivity and rumination often leads to a certain mental vulnerability that has been well documented and researched by psychiatrists for centuries. Beloved author Madeleine D’Engle once famously noted that the “Artistic temperament sometimes seems a battleground, a dark angel of destruction and a bright angel of creativity wrestling”;In essence living as an artist can be a state of constant struggle for many.
